Cluster 3: Skip Counting in Multiple Contexts
Skip counting is an early focus in the year so students are able apply it throughout the year. Tools such as number lines and hundred charts should be used to support skip counting. Arrays are a context for skip counting. Second graders should use the rows and columns of arrays as a more efficient way to count and as model of repeated addition. Students should understand that a 3 x 4 array can be expressed as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 or 4 + 4 + 4. Counting the items in an array is a form of skip counting. (See About this Cluster and the Unpacking Document below for more details on this cluster.)
